Throwback Thursday: Laying the 70s Foundation on this Road Glide ST

What does it take to rewind time with a custom motorcycle paint job? Join us inside HOGWORKZ paint booth as our maestro of color, Raf, embarks on a journey to bring a 2022 Road Glide ST back to the iconic style of the 1970s. This isn't just slapping on some paint; it's the careful crafting of a vintage vibe that's going to be far out!

From Inspiration to Initial Lines: Setting the Retro Styling

Raf's vision for this project is pure 70s nostalgia, and it all starts with the foundational patterns. He meticulously lays down fine lines, a delicate dance of precision and a keen eye for symmetry. You can see the concentration as he steps back, analyzes, and tweaks, ensuring every stripe is just right. It's this dedication to detail that transforms a simple paint job into a work of art.

The Sticky Side of Perfection: Masking for the Magic

To bring those retro patterns to life, masking is key. Raf reaches for his trusty rolls of painter's tape, specifically highlighting the importance of using a tape that won't harm the crucial base coat. He even gives a shout-out to the green "Lime Line" tape, a favorite for creating those smooth, flowing curves reminiscent of classic lowrider designs and flame jobs.

Tank Topper Tease & Lacing Logistics

The HOGWORKZ tank topper introduces an intriguing element to the design. Raf grapples with the placement of the lacing, a distinct 70s touch. He contemplates the interplay between the fine lines and the fabric, ensuring the lacing will lay naturally and enhance the overall aesthetic. It’s a puzzle of angles and textures that requires careful consideration.

Paisley Dreams & Adhesive Adventures

The chosen lacing, with its cool paisley pattern and mesh backing, opens up exciting possibilities. Raf's already thinking about how the mesh will allow for manipulation and secure adhesion. But before committing to the bike, a crucial step: testing the 3M Super 77 spray adhesive. This behind-the-scenes experimentation ensures the glue will do its job without compromising the final paint finish. It’s all about laying a solid foundation, both literally and figuratively, for the groovy transformation ahead!

Stay tuned for the next installment as Raf continues to weave his 70s magic onto this Road Glide ST. It’s going to be a trip!
